Ouch

Is this the Whale equivalent of walking into a door frame?
Full story here

I suppose it could have been worse, the boat could have been a Japanese "Scientific" Vessel...

The Rules need not apply?

So what applies- road rules or maritime rules? And will the AA attend if they breakdown in the middle of Cook Strait?

Men set out to drive van across Cook Strait

DEREK FLYNN/Marlborough Express
VAN-CY A TRIP: The two men left Waikawa marina under the shroud of darkness at 6am, heading out toward the northern entrance of the Marlborouh Sounds.

LATEST: Two men's attempt to cross Cook Strait in a van has gotten underway this morning.

Aeronautic machinists Adam Turnbull and Dan Melling made the news late last month after converting their Toyota Tarago van - called "Roofliss" - into an amphibian vessel.

The two left Waikawa marina under the shroud of darkness at 6am, heading out toward the northern entrance of the Marlborouh Sounds.
They have now entered Cook Strait, and are perched on the van's roof with a map.

Conditions remain good with the sun shining, very little wind and a gentle roll lifting the van.

The men aim to be at Mana Bay marina by 3pm this afternoon.
Responding to earlier doubters about the viability of their attempt, Dan Melling said, "Not many people would have taken a van across the Strait, so until you do you don't know, do you?"

Makes me wonder though, can he apply for Carbon Credits? Innovative...now, where'd those seeds go again?

Haha!

From The HeraldSun:

A STUDENT has some scrubbing to do after his parents discovered he'd painted an 18m penis on their roof. Rory McInnes, 18, decided to make his family home stand out after watching a documentary about Google Earth. Armed with a tin of white paint, he climbed on top of the $2 million home in Berkshire, south east England, and set to work. His artwork remained unnoticed for 12 months until a helicopter pilot spotted it and swooped down low so his passengers could take photos. Dad Andy thought it was a prank call when a British newspaper contacted him about the painting this week. "It's an April Fool's joke, right? There's no way there's a 60ft phallus on top of my house,'' Mr McInnes told The Sun. He confronted his four children, finding his answers when he reached Rory over the phone in Brazil. Part-way through gap-year travels, Rory could not hold back his laughter as he confessed: "Oh, so you've found it then.'' The image has been compared to the Cerne Abbas Giant, a 55m-high naked figure carved into the hill at Dorset which is said to attract couples seeking to have children. Mum Clare said: "We don't want any more children, so the idea of sleeping under a giant fertility symbol is rather worrying.'' Mr McInnes added: "We don't want to lie in bed at night and hear couples at it above us. "When Rory gets home he will be given a scrubbing brush and white spirit and he can go and scrub it off.''

Pensioner strikes back: Intruder hit with rolling pin

Crying teen found in his boxer shorts

Stuff.co.nz Tuesday, 03 March 2009

Hamilton police are praising an elderly woman who fought off an aggressive youth with a rolling pin as he tried to break into her home.
The woman successfully managed to keep the 15-year-old at bay in the early hours of Saturday morning by repeatedly striking him on the head with the rolling pin after he smashed a back window and tried to reach around to unlock the door.
Constable Chris Mankelow said officers arrived at the woman's address to find the offender embarrassed and wearing only his boxer shorts.
"The woman who is aged in her seventies and lives on her own was awoken about 3.30am by a man swearing and banging on her door, claiming he lived there."
Despite the lady's assurances that it was her home, where she has lived for 30 years, the boy would not leave and call centre operators could hear him yelling abuse at her, police said.
"So he's stuck his head in and the victim has promptly struck him on the head with her rolling pin, she noticed he was still there so she's hit him a second and third time," Mr Mankelow said.
"When we arrived we found the offender crying. He'd had had a wee 'accident' and stripped down to his boxers and was pretty keen to be taken away."
He had been bailed to his parents' address and referred to Youth Aid.
Mr Mankelow said responding officers were impressed by the pensioner's bravery

The Razors Edge loves a good Odd Spot story, and this one is a right royal cock-up by the Wellington bureaucrats.

The Brain Gain?

They say Kiwi's are reportedly fleeing the country in droves and taking their skills with them. More room for us I say, thats great. At least however there is a net migration gain, as we are now bringing 102 years olds in to replace them from the UK.

In all seriousness, hats off to the bloke though...he says he's wanting to move here now because when he's 105 he doesn't want to look back and wish he'd moved to NZ when he was 102! And he's coming over the old fashioned way...by boat.

I sincerely hope Mr Smoothfluid doesn't take that long to come back!

Competition: Name the drink

As per every game of cricket we play, the Merivale- Papanui 4B's meet at the pub for a jar before hitting the field on Saturday afternoons. While we won't mention the score in yesterdays game (not so good) we can show you the "Bar Cat" who quite happily curled up on the stool next to the bar.

Now, your challenge is to suggest what drink the cat might order if it were able...

Cheers (and Merry Xmas!)

Genius!

Walking home accross a sundrenched Hagley Park after work today a dude went past the other way riding a mountainbike, which he'd hooked up to a lawnmower engine. Now thats outside the square- it wasn't fast or graceful and it wouldn't add to the Pedometer Challenge, but man I just tip my hat to that sort of outside the square thinking!

The Luckiest Day Of Our Lives

In this crazy rollercoaster of a year, where the vast majority of my friends are either going through break ups, getting married or having kids this grabbed my attention....

Saturday just past was the 7th of the 7th of 07.

Among superstition circles the number 7 is the luckiest of all numbers, which makes last Saturday quite a special day. Apparently hordes of people were heading to the alter, having babies and playing Save The World concerts on this day, just because its such a lucky day.

And dammit, I forgot to buy a lotto ticket.

Heres an article link to analyse 7/7/07 further, for those of you too lazy to google it!

From the New York Times, click here

And no, I'm not reporting my luck stakes from that fateful day here. To be honest the 6th of June 2006 was probably more fun....

Not a Blue Moon....but nearly

We missed out on having a Blue Moon tonight by a matter of hours- other parts of the world have it tonight due to timezones, but we have to wait til July for ours.

In case you're wondering, a blue moon is a second full moon in a calendar month

Meet The Team At The Edge

Quite a few people have been asking me how hard is it to do this blog thing. Well I'm pleased to bring you this post where you can meet the team who make it all happen

Thats Warren and Iain at the front (Warren is the pensive one) and their staff are humming away in great productivity in the background.

Come and meet them someday, by appointment only of course!
